DUNMURRY C.C

ASHLEY PK,DUNMURRY

THE EARLY YEAR'S

In 1942 a local minister, the Rev J McCleery and some friend's decided to revive cricket in the village. They formed a team which played their matche's on a square cut on the Dunmurry R.F.C pitch.Well known name's like the Russell's,McCracken's,Green's and McComb's to name but a few, were the basis of the new team. They first played in the Belfast league and after winning the cup in 1947 decided to join the Northern Cricket Union.

After many year's playing in the qualifying league's the club joined the senior league in the early 60's.Up until then Frank McComb ( The Parky ),after whom the current ground is named, was the man behind the club. The club had purchased Ashley Park from the Hockey Club but played their matche's at the Warren Field's( Post Office club to us youngster's),untill in the late 50's when the club moved to the newly refurbished Fullerton Park.In 1966 the club were able to move to Ashley Park but due to lack of fund's for maintanence this was short lived. In this period member's would play back at Fullerton or travel to Mallusk playing field's.

THE MODERN ERA

In 1988 thank's to Enterprise Ulster and hard work by Arif Shah the club built our current club house and prepared  our square.Since then the club has seen some good and some bad times. Many of the old face's have long departed but some are still about.New face's have emerged to carry on the work done by our founder's both on and off the pitch.Frank McComb was our second scorer and since he departed only two other's have held this post.Alan Hanna and our current scorer Brian Irwin can still be seen at the club on match day.The day to day running of the club was well in hand with people like Johnny Russell,Norman Preslley and of course our current committee. In the past Sam Russell,Stanley McCracken,Robert Patterson keep the pitch right and now Arif Shah,D G Irvine and David McFadzean keep up the good work.

HONOUR'S

The club has been served by many good member's off the pitch but in year's past has been served by many good player's on the pitch. In latter day's the pick of the batsmen were John Russell Jnr,Sam Stewart and Martin Hawthorne with Bobby ( Pab) Connelly and Roy Glover the all rounder's.The bowler's to mention would be Arif Shah and George Glass with D R Irvine regularly keeping wicket. The club has had it's fair share of success and in 1960 won the Minor Qualifying Cup but the most memorable achivement was four Junior Cup wins.

The first Junior Cup win was in 1969 but the real success was in the late 70's when in 1977 and 78 the trophy came back to Dunmurry. It is at this stage when we are lead to beleive that the club badge was first introduced. It is said that the three star's on the badge represent the three Junior cup wins and the arch represent's the bridge in Dunmurry Village. One more success was to come our way in 1985 but in the league our main concern is to stay in section two and work in the future to section one status.
